Mukaro Mission Redux

Book 5 of the Burnham series begins in the aftermath of the terrorist incident in Virginia's Shenandoah National Park (Book 4, Lone Wolves). Frank Burnham had tracked down and killed Vasili Shomov, the former Russian Spetsnaz operative who was a terrorist for al Qaeda. In the tradition of 'no good deed goes unpunished', Burnham now finds himself under Federal investigation. But he also has another problem. A Cuban assassin, working at the behest of the Nicaraguans, has been ordered to assassinate him in retaliation for the decades old killing of a very senior Sandinista Commandante. Using intelligence provided Ana Montes, another Cuban spy who is a star analyst at the DIA; the assassin stalks Burnham waiting for his chance. But time is running out. All the charges against Burnham are dropped by the Justice Department. The facts of the case are too explosive for a public trial. In a quid pro quo deal, Burnham no longer has to worry about going to jail, but he is forced into working for the CIA as a contractor. But for some time, the FBI has suspected that Ana Montes could be a Cuban spy. The FBI decides to use Burnham as bait to flush out her and the assassin. They nab the assassin just before he completes his deadly mission. After his ordeal,Burnham decides to return to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe with his lover Anna Guerin for some R & R. But Zimbabwe is once more smoldering just below the surface. There might be a coup against the President. He is ordered to assist the local CIA Chief-of-Station to uncover the plot and find the conspirators so the political ramifications can be determined. Burnham learns that some of his old friends are conspirators. But Zimbabwe politics is like a next of vipers. Plots and sub-plots abound. He discovers that his old friends might be in grave danger. Burnham didn't care if President Mugabe were assassinated, but in the end he has to race through the African night to save his old friends from betrayal.
