1. A phone call with consequences
In search of an address, one day I stumbled upon the telephone number of an old acquaintance. Annette Müller was a successful management assistant for publishing who also ran a mail-order business for special gift items. I called her spontaneously.
"Hello SAN ESPRIT!" I heard a familiar voice say on the other end of the line.
It was indeed Annette who answered. After a brief chat, I asked about her business life and what else she had going on. "I've become a healer and I run a hospital for energy healing in Bavaria. It's called SAN ESPRIT," she told me. What? Obviously she had lost her mind! A healer? I couldn't believe it. What on Earth had happened to her over the last few years?
"I bet you didn't expect that, did you?" said Annette, breaking the silence. Without giving me a chance to respond, she told me she had achieved great results healing people and how she now ran a school for energy healing. At that point I was ready to hang up the phone and put an end to this ridiculous exchange.
"That's really interesting." I said politely. "What made you get involved with that?"
"Oh it's a long story. I'll tell you when we have more time." She replied. "You can't imagine how wonderful it feels to free people from pain and suffering."
I certainly could not imagine that! The idea that Annette might be able to do was beyond my imagination. How could it be possible that a fairly average woman with no medical education could heal the sick? What did energy healing really mean anyway?
Hearing the phrase energy healer made me think of manipulation and deception. At best, some people might be experiencing a placebo effect, but actual healing? No. That was impossible! When Annette asked if I would like to join the training program, I nearly laughed out loud. Me, a healer? It was amusing but no, I would definitely not be doing that.
Wanting to avoid a longer discussion, I said, "You know, this is all a bit much for me right now. I'll need some time to think about it."
"Ok. Meanwhile do take a look at my website, www.san-esprit.com." Annette suggested.
"Yes I'll do that." I told her and found an excuse to end the conversation. I wished her well, great success and promised to be in touch again soon, although that was a promise I had no intention of keeping.
A few minutes later I was sitting at my desk. For some reason I couldn't stop thinking about the phone call. I decided to tell my kids about it as no doubt, they would have a good laugh about it too, especially Ina who wanted to pursue a medical career.
"You're not going to believe this!" I said on entering her room.
"Not now, Mum. I'm studying for a math test tomorrow." Ina said, pushing me away. My other daughter Anna, whose finals were coming up, was also too busy to talk.
I went into the kitchen and made myself a cup of tea. I stared at the illuminated windows across the road. I couldn't understand how Annette could have changed so much. What had happened to make her consider getting into energy healing of all things? To be honest, I didn't even know what energy healing was.
I got out my laptop, walked into the living room and curled up on the couch. First I took a look at the SAN ESPRIT website. After that, I googled spiritual healing, energy healing and anything else related to the subject. Without noticing the time, I spent hours reading and was amazed to see how much there was on the net. Surprisingly there were even statements by scientists on energy healing. But most of what I read, I labeled as crap.
Certainly, none of it fitted my worldview. I was far too busy deal
