Holger Bengs, editor and author, studied chemistry and business administration. He worked for several years in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry before starting his own consultancy, BCNP Consultants, with headquarters in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. According to his background in polymer chemistry he got responsibility as a project manager for producing starch polymers by biocatalysis and furthermore to find new applications for these well defined biopolymers. He learned quickly that a project manager needs aside his own expertise experts from different fields, i.e. genetic engineering, fermentation, micro biology, marketing, economy. Scientific interdisciplinarity and interdisciplinarity beyond natural sciences are a key success factors to develop new products and to bring them successfully to the market. This story holds also true in the consulting practice of BCNP standing for biotech, chemistry, nanotech, pharma. The serie of Compasses to Europe s Innovative Chemical Companies was motivated by the observation that quite often one speaks about company founding and entrepreneurship in the context of biotechnology and nanotechnoloy, but not about innovative chemical companies; even if chemical substances and processes are in the focus of the technology considered: This compass aims at bringing all interested parties to the table. Co-author is Dr. Georg F.L. WieÃmeier, Chief Technology and Innovation Officer of Sibelco Group, Belgium, and presidium member of the German Chemical Society. 4GENE is currently a funded project at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and is a part of the EXIST Technology Transfer Program of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi). The 4GENE team has been working on its products for an impressive three years. We are aiming to spin-off from the university in spring of 2017 and start the operation as an independent small sized enterprise. More importantly, with offices and laboratories in Freising and Stuttgart, we still embrace a tight relationship in research and development with the professorship for biotechnology of natural products at TUM.
In 2015 4GENE was the Winner of the 1st ACHEMA Start-Up Competition. Start-Up s were awarded in three Categories. 4GENE was recognized and awarded a prize, 1st place in the category: "Industrial Biotechnology"
4GENE has identified its target business segments within the cosmetics and industrial solution markets. 4GENE produces aroma glycosides up to 1t per aroma precursor per year for their business partners and their consumer applications. 4GENE is licensing its production technology for larger scale production, meanwhile providing "research on demand" services for special requests of our business partners.
4GENE is the owner of a technology that allows the identification and application of biocatalysts in the biotechnological production of aroma glycosides. It is offered at costs which allows the initial and primary application of aroma glycosides in consumer goods.
The 4GENE platform technology enables us to collaborate with customers of all sizes within the identified segments. Our business segments have different legal requirements when adding the aroma precursors to consumer applications. We have addressed this with our corporate structure and are able to address the requirements according to the needs of the consumer and specific application.
