Natural Lactones and Lactams
While there are numerous books on heterocycles and natural products, this text fills the need for an up-to-date summary focusing on recently developed and improved synthetic methods for the preparation of the most important classes of lactones and lactams ? all in one volume. Comprehensive in its coverage, this book also provides readers with a brief description of the occurrence and biological or pharmaceutical activity of the compounds, and each chapter deals with a certain class of lactones or lactames to enable quick access to the information needed. A valuable resource for organic chemists, biochemists and medicinal chemists in academia and industry wanting to learn about successful synthetic routes leading to important natural products and use this as inspiration for their own work in the lab. Tomasz Janecki was born in Lodz (Poland) and studied chemistry at the Technical University of Lodz, obtaining his M.Sc. in 1973 and completing his Ph.D. in 1981 under the supervision of Prof. R. Bodalski. In the following years he spent a year as a postdoctoral fellow with Prof. P. Pauson at Strathclyde University (Glasgow, Scotland), a year with Prof. J. Michl at the University of Texas (Austin, USA) and three years with Prof. K. Folkers also at the University of Texas at Austin. In 1996 he received a Habilitation degree at the Technical University of Lodz and in 1998 he was appointed for six months as visiting professor at Tulane University Medical Center (New Orleans, LA). Currently he is a professor at the Technical University of Lodz (Poland). His main research interests focus on the application of organophosphorus reagents in organic synthesis, especially on the stereoselective synthesis of biologically important classes of organic compounds such as Alpha-alkylidene lactones and lactams, as well as other heterocycles.
